We had a small window of a few weeks to get something out there to redirect the path. Based on the observational data, it wouldn't even need to be that large. Something the size of a pick up truck might be enough, providing it was at the right distance from the asteroid, and the asteroid was far enough away from other planet's gravitational forces.
Even if we couldsomehow do this, we'd have to do it twice. Once to save Terra Durom and once to save Earth. We don't have enough time to get back to Earth and complete a mission, but there is practically no one to save on Terra Durom.
Two problems that are virtually identical. How to solve both at the same time?
